Water Safety
06/05/2026
Summer safety starts now.
As we head into the weekend, we are reminded of how important water safety truly is. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and community in DeSoto County following the recent tragedy that claimed the life of a young man.
Water can be enjoyable, but it is also unpredictable and dangerous. Tragedies can happen quickly and often without warning. That is why constant supervision is critical anytime children or inexperienced swimmers are near water.
Never leave children unattended around pools, lakes, or rivers. Designate a responsible adult to actively watch swimmers at all times. Ensure that life jackets are worn when appropriate, and avoid distractions such as phones when supervising. It is also important to teach children basic water safety skills and to respect the dangers that water can present.
For adults, avoid swimming alone and be mindful of changing conditions, especially in natural bodies of water. Alcohol and water activities do not mix and can impair judgment and reaction time.
