On today’s date, the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team transported James Douglas Willie to Charleston, MS on a court order for a Petition to Revoke Suspended Sentence hearing.
Upon their departure from the courthouse around 10:44 a.m., the Emergency Response Team took all necessary precaution in securing the inmate to be transported to the Tunica County Detention Facility Center. Captain Leardis Griffin, a 13 year veteran with the department, accidentally discharged his assault weapon, causing injury to his lower right leg.
Other members of the Emergency Response Team secured the inmate and deputies with the Tallahatchie County Sheriff’s Office assisted in providing transportation to the medical facility in Tallahatchie County. Captain Griffin was then airlifted to the MED by helicopter. At this time, he is in surgery for the injury sustain to his right leg.
As a standard operating procedure, in any high profile transport, the Emergency Response Team is used for precautionary measure, whether within the county or outside of the county.

The Tunica County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an ongoing investigation into this shooting incident.
The inmate, James Douglas Willie, was secure in the transportation unit and did not receive any injuries.
